During an interview with Variety, Sam Elliott explained that he strongly relates to his Landman character T.L. Norris, an aging oil field worker struggling with physical decline and emotional loss later in life. One particularly heartbreaking scene in the series shows T.L. falling into a swimming pool and being physically unable to pull himself out. The character remains stranded there for hours until his son eventually finds him.

The Sam Elliott health conversation became especially emotional when the actor admitted that the scene felt painfully realistic. According to Parade, he revealed that while he still feels mentally strong, physically he understands exactly what his character is going through at this stage of life. “I’ve had a hard life,” Elliott said, explaining that years of athletic activity and labor-intensive work have left lasting wear on his body.

Despite acknowledging the challenges of aging, Sam Elliott also expressed admiration for today’s actors and gratitude for the long career he has enjoyed in Hollywood. Looking back on his early performances, he admitted there are still moments where he wishes he could revisit certain roles and improve aspects of his work. Now starring alongside Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Jon Hamm, and Andy Garcia in Landman, Elliott praised the talent surrounding him while reflecting on how much the industry has evolved since his early contract-player days at Fox Studios.

The series itself has become a major success for Paramount, drawing millions of viewers and remaining one of streaming television’s biggest hits in recent months. Even as Elliott confronts the realities of aging, many fans continue viewing him as one of Hollywood’s most enduring screen legends. From Tombstone and The Big Lebowski to 1883 and Landman, his performances have carried a rare authenticity that continues resonating with audiences across generations. Now, with refreshing honesty, Elliott is reminding fans that even the toughest Western heroes eventually face the same vulnerabilities and physical limitations that come with growing older.
