The Brady Bunch may have portrayed one of television’s most wholesome families, but behind the scenes, growing up together created some unexpected emotions among the young cast members. Barry Williams recently reflected on the noticeable chemistry he shared with costar Maureen McCormick while filming the classic sitcom during their teenage years.

The actor opened up about the experience during an appearance on the CW docuseries TV We Love. Williams admitted that adolescence made certain scenes more complicated as the young actors matured together, both on and off the set.

According to PEOPLE, Barry Williams and Maureen McCormick especially caught attention while filming a 1973 Brady Bunch episode titled “Room at the Top.” In the storyline, Greg and Marcia Brady argued over who would claim the attic as a private bedroom after growing tired of sharing rooms with their younger siblings.

Producer Lloyd Schwartz recalled one emotional scene where Greg comforted Marcia after upsetting her during their argument. While filming, Schwartz noticed that the interaction between the actors felt far more emotionally charged than a typical brother-and-sister moment. Williams later admitted Schwartz was correct. The actor confessed that McCormick was extremely attractive and that his real feelings naturally started appearing during their scenes together. He joked that he sat too close and leaned in a little too much while filming. Afterward, Schwartz reportedly pulled Williams aside and gently reminded him that Marcia was supposed to be his television sister.

Barry Williams and Maureen McCormick were only teenagers when The Brady Bunch became a massive television hit. Williams began filming at age 14 while McCormick was just 13. By the time the show ended after five seasons, both actors had grown into young adults. Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady, later admitted he also noticed the chemistry between the pair during filming. He described their interactions as more dreamy and romantic than sibling-like at certain moments.

Williams explained that his connection with McCormick remained somewhat playful and complicated throughout the years. He described their relationship as an “on-again, off-again” dynamic that often paused whenever production breaks separated the cast. Despite the awkward moments, the strong bond between the actors helped create some of the show’s most memorable scenes. Decades later, fans still remain fascinated by the behind-the-scenes relationships that developed while America watched the Brady family grow up together on television.
