Reba McEntire Shares Her Plans For Retirement, And It’s A Long Way Off

Reba McEntire marked her 70th birthday this year and made one thing clear: she is not planning to step away anytime soon. When asked whether she planned to slow down, McEntire said she did not know when Reba McEntire might retire. She even joked it could be in 20 years. That frank reply underscored how little she wants retirement to define the next phase of her life.

Her comments echo a simple philosophy: keep doing what brings joy until it no longer does. Fans who wonder when Reba McEntire will retire will be reassured by her energy; she remains busy on multiple projects and says she will “know when it’s time” to step back.

Reba McEntire Reflects On Conversation With Dolly Parton

McEntire recalled a long-ago talk with Dolly Parton about retirement. The two discussed the subject “an awful lot” during Parton’s guest turn on McEntire’s sitcom. Parton asked, rhetorically, why anyone would stop doing work that made them so happy—a view McEntire wholeheartedly shares. That memory helps explain why the question of when Reba McEntire will retire still feels hypothetical.

According to Rolling Stone, McEntire’s outlook mirrors her friend’s: slow down if needed, but do not quit a craft you love. She prefers to let instinct guide her decisions instead of setting a fixed retirement date.

A Career That Keeps Her On Stage

Right now, McEntire shows no sign of winding down. She is serving a fourth stint as a coach on The Voice and readies season two of her sitcom, Happy’s Place. Earlier this year she hosted the ACM Awards for the 18th time and performed a medley celebrating decades of country music. Given that schedule, it’s no surprise fans ask when Reba McEntire will retire—and why she answers with a laugh.

Her willingness to keep working demonstrates how passion can outlast age. If she does wait two decades, she’ll still be doing so on her own terms—which, to her, is the whole point of deciding when to retire.
