Life Behind the Fame

Al Pacino Regrets Not Marrying Ex Diane Keaton After Her Death

by Ruth A

Published October 17, 2025

Al Pacino is heartbroken over the loss of his former partner, Diane Keaton, and now regrets never marrying her. Their on-and-off romance lasted nearly two decades, starting when they met on the set of The Godfather. Though deeply connected, the two never married—a decision Pacino wishes he could change.

According to Page Six, Keaton died in California at 79, and her passing deeply affected Pacino. A close friend said he always called her “the love of his life” and often talked about getting another chance. “If it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do-over,” he once said. But now, that chance is gone.

The story of Al Pacino and Diane Keaton began in 1974 when they started dating after filming the Godfather trilogy. Their chemistry on screen reflected their real feelings off-screen. Yet, their differences eventually pulled them apart. Keaton gave Pacino an ultimatum to marry her, but he couldn’t commit. They split in 1990.

Even after the breakup, Al Pacino and Diane Keaton stayed connected through mutual respect. They lived near each other in Beverly Hills but never spoke again. When asked why, Pacino said they had already said everything that needed to be said.

Years later, Keaton said it was better they never married. In a 2017 interview, she admitted she once hoped he would “just do it” without proposing. But she eventually realized marriage might have been difficult for both of them. “It would have been a nightmare for him,” she said.

Despite their separation, the affection between Al Pacino and Diane never faded. In 2017, Pacino honored her at the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony, calling her “a great artist” and saying, “I love you, forever.” Keaton never married and adopted two children, while Pacino has four. Even in death, Keaton remains a lasting presence in Pacino’s life—a reminder of a love story that ended too soon.
