An iconic Julia Roberts look continues to enjoy popularity

The legacy of Julia Roberts’s 1990 Golden Globes look continues to inspire, even within her own family. 35 years ago, Roberts turned heads in a menswear Armani suit that redefined red-carpet fashion. At the time, she was only 22 years old, yet her daring choice created a timeless moment that still resonates today.

Now, decades later, the same suit has reemerged in the most personal of ways. During a recent interview with Extra, Julia Roberts revealed that she kept the outfit in her closet all these years. To her delight, her 18-year-old son Henry recently tried it on, proving that iconic style has no expiration date.

When Roberts first stepped onto the Golden Globes stage in 1990, she wore the tailored Armani suit with natural confidence. Her decision to shop the men’s department rather than the women’s floor reflected both instinct and boldness. Roberts later recalled how she immediately loved the look, even arranging to have it tailored on the spot.

That night, Roberts also won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in Steel Magnolias, cementing the evening as a career milestone, as noted in People. Looking back, she described the ensemble as one of her “all-time favorite outfits.” Though red carpets have grown more formal in the years since, her menswear moment remains one of the most talked about looks of her career.

In recent years, Roberts has embraced sharing her fashion legacy with both family and colleagues. Her son Henry wearing the suit is only the latest example. Earlier this fall, Amanda Seyfried borrowed one of Roberts’ Versace ensembles for the Venice Film Festival, creating another moment of connection across generations of Hollywood.

Her costar Ayo Edebiri has also joined in the admiration. After hearing Roberts’s story about the Armani suit, she expressed excitement over the idea of trying it on herself. Edebiri even wore a custom gray Loewe suit at this year’s Golden Globes, inspired by the very look Roberts made famous. For Roberts, lending and inspiring through fashion is a way to honor friendships and keep her most meaningful memories alive.
