Saturday Night Live is returning after its star-studded 50th-anniversary special, and the new episode has everyone talking. Shane Gillis returned as host for February’s final show, his second hosting gig for the sketch comedy show.
The comedian, who was fired from SNL before he even had the opportunity to make his debut during Season 45, made the most of his return with a night of laughter and moments. One particular sketch, however, has stirred up conversation on the web.
Fans react to Shane Gillis looking like John Candy in the last ‘SNL’ commercial sketch
As the popular sketch circulated on social media, fans couldn’t help but comment on the resemblance of the late comedian with Gillis. “Could Shane Gillis play John Candy in a biopic?” one tweeted., while another joked that Shane looks like John Candy’s love child “Shane Gillis is the modern-day John Candy #SNL50,” a third comment said.
John Candy passed away in 1994, but he remains one of the greatest comedy stars of his time. From his early days on SCTV to iconic roles in The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Spaceballs, he had an incredible knack for making people laugh.
What is the commercial sketch Shane Gillis was in about?
The fake commercials in SNL have long been goofy and hilarious, and this was no exception. The sketch was a commercial for an imaginary medication called Coupla Beers, a medication meant to make social encounters all the more enjoyable with immediate effect.
Gillis was particularly good at playing a dad eagerly cheering on his son at a ball game, dressed in what is probably his best attempt at looking presentable. His exaggerated energy, paired with the ridiculousness of the setup of the sketch, meant that people had a fun time watching the sketch. The sketch hit so well that some viewers even joked that they wished Coupla Beers was an actual product.
