
60 years after its original release, The Sound of Music is returning, but this time, in 4K. To mark the milestone anniversary, the Walt Disney Film Restoration team has restored the musical so that fans can experience the nostalgia from watching in ultra-high definition. The remastered version will be available in cinemas and then on Blu-ray later this year.
The 1965 classic was brought to life by director Robert Wise, and starred the iconic Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer as the lead actors. Being one of the most cherished films in movie history, its upcoming 4K restoration aims to elevate the stunning visuals and timeless soundtrack, to provide a fresh experience for both longtime fans and new audiences.

The Walt Disney Film Restoration team spent up to nine months to digitally scan and work on the preserved film footage. They ensured every frame was cleaned carefully to remove dirt, dents, and other imperfections, so that its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant costumes can shine brighter than the original.
With enhanced color accuracy and improved audio quality, this restoration honors the film’s legacy while preserving its magic for future generations. Fans are excited about the much anticipated re-release, even though some have watched The Sound of Music several times.
A timeless classic that continues to inspire
The Sound of Music was originally adapted from the Rodgers & Hammerstein stage musical, The Sound of Music. Upon release, the film became popular right away and went on to win 5 Academy Awards, one of which was for Best Picture. The Sound of Music is still one of the most cherished musicals in history with the amazing songs “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” and “Edelweiss” still enchanting listeners of all ages around the world.
For several decades, the tale of Maria, an energetic young lady that goes on to become a nanny to the Von Trapp kids, has warmed an innumerable number of people’s hearts.
