Jane Fonda is a name that has become popular in the entertainment industry over the years. With a career that has lasted for several decades, the 87-year-old has won almost all the accolades in her field, including Oscars, Emmys, and Golden Globes. Despite achieving tremendous success, many of her fans may be quite surprised to learn that her career nearly ended before it took off as she contemplated quitting acting just after her first movie.

In a recent interview, Fonda gave insight into the challenges she faced early in her career that almost made her quit acting. Thankfully, the A-list actress didn’t give up on her dreams, and she is dishing out lessons from her early career days to inspire people who might encounter challenges in life, too.

Speaking with Variety in a conversation published on Wednesday, February 19, Fonda revealed that when she landed the role of June Ryder in the Romantic Comedy, Tall Story, her experience on the movie set was very devastating. She explained that the director-producer, Josh Logan, berated her so much that she entertained the idea to quit acting.

In Jane Fonda’s 2005 memoir My Life So Far, the actress who was trying to establish herself and live up to the reputation of her famous actor dad also detailed how Logan’s words bashed her confidence. She disclosed that the filmmaker criticized her mercilessly calling her horrible, talentless, and a dishonor to her father’s name. Fonda admitted that his comments seriously damaged her morale and made her question whether she was truly suited for acting in the first place.

Jane Fonda claims director Edward Dmytryk saved her acting Career 

The actress added that she was able to overcome her low self-esteem and confidence after director Edward Dmytryk offered her a role in the 1962 film Walk on the Wild Side. Jane Fonda claimed that, the offer from Dmytryk’s changed her career trajectory as she ditched the idea of quitting acting and promised herself to make the best of the opportunity.

Fonda also mentioned that contrary to the challenges she faced in her first movie, working with Dmytryk was very smooth as she was given a role that suited her personality. She concluded that the internal joy that comes with doing what you enjoy helped her embody her character, Kitty Twist, a hooker who worked in a high-class brothel run by Madam Jo, Barbara Stawyck’s character. Jane Fonda credits Dmytryk for saving her career and taking a chance on her after her troubled path working with Josh Logan.
