Joni Mitchell was spotted out and about in Beverly Hills, California on Wednesday, a year after her performance at the Grammy Awards ceremony. She was accompanied by a companion and protected her eyes from the sun with a pair of shades.

Joni wore a black jacket over floral print navy pants, and threw on a cap with her hair tied into braids underneath. Her companion held her hand as she went on with a walking stick, following his lead.

Joni has had an impressive music career since the ‘60s, and can boast of eleven Grammy Awards to her name, of which one is honorary and the rest competitive. Unfortunately, Joni’s career and public appearances took a hit after she suffered a brain aneurysm rupture that left her unable to walk or talk, and needing physical therapy.

Although before her brain aneurysm, Joni already stepped away from touring and doing concerts, her public appearances continued as she would attend events to speak on environmental issues. Joni returned to doing shows in 2021, however since her performance at last year’s Grammys, she has yet to announce any more events.

Life beyond the spotlight

Aside from being a legendary singer-songwriter across the rock, pop, jazz, and folk genres, Joni was committed to other passions like painting, and would jokingly describe herself as a painter derailed by circumstance. She even used to paint her own album covers, and would only sell her pieces sparingly.

Speaking of painting, her music inspired French painter Jacques Benoit, who produced up to sixty paintings, corresponding to fifty of Joni’s songs in the ‘80s. The 81-year-old has also inspired artists like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Elle Goulding and even Madonna, who said Joni was her idol back in high school.
