Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s love story is said to be divine. On the 75th anniversary of their marriage, Jimmy Carter retold the story of how he met Rosalynn in an unplanned yet significant way.
Rosalynn Carter died at the age of 96 in November 2023 after being diagnosed with dementia, while her husband passed away at 100 on December 29, 2024. However, the beautiful marriage that lasted 77 years and became the desire and envy of many started casually in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s 77-year marriage
Jimmy Carter married Rosalynn Carter in 1946 when he was 21 and she was 18, but the story did not begin there. The night he met Rosalynn, then Rosalynn Smith, Jimmy Carter was supposed to go on a date with Georgia’s pageant queen. Apparently, his date was canceled because a family event came up, and the pageant queen needed to attend to it.
He had just returned from the US Naval Academy after a break, so that night, he had all the time to drive around Georgia. Soon, he caught a glimpse of a woman on the steps of a Methodist church and asked her out to see a movie. Then, history began as Jimmy Carter made up his mind to marry Rosalynn. When his mother asked about the date, he recalled telling her, “She’s the one I’m going to marry.”
Rosalynn Carter would later say no to Jimmy after he asked her to marry him. She delayed her response even though she had first liked the picture of him she saw at her sister Ruth’s place. Retelling the story on their 75th anniversary in 2021, she said, “I fell in love with that picture.”
Political relationship
Jimmy and Rosalynn’s marriage went beyond marital responsibilities to a political affair. Rosalyn Carter influenced her husband’s political decisions and his success as a president. She also established the position of the First Lady in the White House, attended briefings, and actively participated in Jimmy Carter’s presidency.
When his term expired, their marriage partnership did not stop producing results. They established the Carter Center, and Rosalynn became a mental health advocate. Together, they redefined what it means to serve, not just as leaders but as lifelong partners committed to creating a better world. Their unwavering devotion to each other and their shared mission serves as an enduring testament to the power of love, respect, and teamwork in shaping a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
