Kate Middleton, formally stylized Catherine, Princess of Wales, has opened up about her cancer struggles in a rare comment about the health battle she’s contended with for almost a year now. Her comments came just after the royal family’s routine Christmas day church service.
Kate Middleton first announced she was diagnosed with cancer back in March. The news followed the 42-year-old enduring severe abdominal pain, which prompted her to pursue surgery back in January. After medical officials determined the cause was actually cancer, Kate drastically withdrew from the public eye and her usual public engagements. That finally changed in October and, in another change of pace, she has also made rare commentary about her cancer ordeal.
Kate Middleton shares a rare comment on her cancer struggles and it’s all too relatable nature
After Christmas Day church service, the royal family always stays at their Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England. From Sandringham, Middleton spoke with a healthcare worker about her experience—which she acknowledged as the experience of far too many others.
“The amount of people who have written this year is extraordinary,” said Middleton, speaking with Rachel Anvil of Cambridge’s Royal Papworth Hospital, “and I think cancer just really does resonate with so many families.”
Anvil, according to New York Post, called Middleton an “inspiration.” This comes from Anvil’s own career, which began in a cancer unit; she asserts that having such a high-profile figure be so transparent about struggling with cancer is helpful to others in a similar situation.
Inspiring and leaning on others
Kate’s heroes are clear. In an Instagram shared by Anvil’s mother, Middleton praised, “People like you are doing all the hard work out there,” adding that she is “hugely grateful” for people like Anvil and other medical professionals supporting people through medical emergencies.
Middleton’s support unit also included her family, especially two members instrumental in her emotional care. Speaking with OK! about enduring an “incredibly difficult year,” former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond asserted, “I think a shout-out should also go to Carole and Michael Middleton, who have undoubtedly been a vital part of the family this year, both practically and emotionally.” Bond believes it is very likely “William and Catherine leaned on them very hard during their darkest days.”
This is evidenced, in part, by a sweet thank you letter penned by Prince Louis. Photographs reveal that his letter reads, in part, “Thank you to granny and grandpa because they have played games with me.” No doubt, the emotional support and comfort of the family’s most vulnerable was of great importance while navigating such troubled times.
