Mark Acheson appeared in the 2003 holiday movie Elf in the famous mailroom scene with Will Ferrell. Interestingly, his part almost did not make it to the final cut as producers wanted it out, but Director Jon Favreau ensured it remained.
The scene is now viral on social media this holiday season, birthing memes and hilarious interactions among Elf fans. Acheson recalled getting an impromptu call from his agent to be the mailroom guy, who was supposed to say one line— “work release.”

Fans can rerun Elf on Hulu and Max, while premium subscribers on Amazon Prime and Disney + can also view it anytime. The mailroom scene featured Acheson’s character in conversation with Will’s Elf, who was sent to the section at his father’s job. Instead of his pre-planned single-liner, Faveau required Acheson to improvise with Will.
During the dialogue, Acheson’s character laments to Elf about being 26 years old but with nothing to be proud of, and the latter offers some encouragement, telling him he is still very young. Acheson was grateful to Faveau for keeping the scene in as it gave his acting career a much-needed boost.
Why did producers nearly cut out the mailroom scene?
Elf producers thought Acheson’s character being 26 was unrealistic, but Favreau thought it was a funny joke to leave in. Even Acheson was surprised because he was 46 at the time and did not consider his looks fitting for his statement.
Fans seemed to agree with the producers as they recently took to social media to call out Acheson’s ridiculous claim while discussing with Will. “I can believe in an Elf from the North Pole. But no way in hell do I believe the guy on the left is 26. One of the biggest lies in movie history,” someone posted on X.
