Cher enjoys the spotlight, and she knows how to get her fan’s attention each time. Recently, the pop singer who has experienced two failed marriages and has been involved in several high-profile relationships recently detailed her first marriage to Sonny Bono.
The Goddess of Pop, who dropped out of high school at 16, met Sonny and instantly felt attracted to him. Cher once shared that she loved the 27-year-old Sonny in a way she could not describe, despite their age difference. They married in 1964 and started making music together, but their partnership soon encountered challenges.
Cher and Sonny’s relationship
In her memoir, Cher: The Memoir, set to be released on November 19th, Cher described her instant connection with Sonny, and their desire to succeed together. Their first song, “I Got You Babe,” recorded in 1965, became popular and got everyone talking about them. They continued to record songs that topped the chart in the late ’60s.
The couple also started The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour in 1971, which won the hearts of their audience as several people loved to watch them. However, their fame as a duo began to wear off when Cher noticed that Sonny had “started not to care” about her. His strict restrictions made her tired of their collaboration, and she felt like breaking the contract.
However, Sonny and the team did not want their agreement to end and kept putting up with whatever Cher demanded until she shockingly discovered that Sonny’s contract implied that she had no share in the company’s earnings all along. She divorced him in 1974, ending The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.
Motherhood and career
Cher is the mother of two children, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman, whom she had with Gregg Allman. Despite being a single mother, she adores children, which helped her ignore the difficulty of raising hers alone while also excelling in her career.
The pop singer sang solo songs that topped the charts in addition to those she recorded with Sonny. She has also acted in several movies that won awards, including the Oscar. Recently, Cher has also attained another desired height in the industry, having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Despite the setbacks that she has encountered in the past, she serves as a beacon of hope to many and a big influence for women that they are enough and have what it takes to be successful alone.
