The Campbell Soup Company Changing Its Name After More Than 150 Years

The Campbell Soup Company announced the move to change its name during the Investor Day meeting in New York City. The longstanding grocery company will simply drop the word “Soup” off their name, to rebrand as The Campbell Company.

Having provided vegetables, snacks, salsa, soup, and the like consistently for the last 155 years, the president, and chief executive officer Mark Clouse believes they are due for some changes. He noted that they have dedicated the last five years to re-strategizing and modifying their business mission.

The Campbell Soup Company’s new name still awaits shareholder approval at the annual meeting in November, and it is likely that the majority will support the change. Clouse noted that the minor update better reflects the company’s portfolio range while maintaining its lasting reputation built across generations.

Clouse added that although the company has grown to be much more than soup, they are not leaving their product behind. A representative from the brand also noted that the name change cuts across every asset including the company website address, which still carries the usual name.

Campbell’s original name

Campbell’s beginnings date back to 1869 when commercial canner and packer Abraham Anderson and wholesale fruit and vegetable vendor Joseph Campbell established Anderson & Campbell. The products were labeled with just Joseph’s last name until 1922, when the word “soup” was added.

The company has experienced growth in recent time as they acquired Sovos Brands, the makers of Rao’s Homemade, for $2.7 billion. Consumers raised concern about the pasta sauce recipe getting changed or declining in quality, however Clouse assured the public that it will remain the same. Other products in their line include Prego, Pace, Noosa, Goldfish, Pepperidge Farm and Cape Cod Chips.
