The Love Boat ran between 1977 to 1986, starring the likes of Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, and Ted Lange. Years later, ABC is back with another cruise-themed drama series, The Doctor Odyssey featuring Don Johnson as Captain Robert Massey.
Season one is set to debut later in September, giving an introduction to the offshore romance between the characters stuck on the high sea. According to reports, fans of Love Boat will love this new release as it promises to surpass the classic’s standards.
New sea drama just like ‘The Love Boat’
Don will co-star with Joshua Jackson, who is Dr. Max on the cruise ship, with Phillipa Soo on his medical team as Nurse Avery Morgan and Sean Teale as Nurse Tristan Silva. Per the trailer of the series, Don’s character tells Jackson that his mission is to preserve the dream.

The Ryan Murphy production will see Dr. Max take on a new medical case each week, with a blend of Love Boat’s steamy romantic vibe. Not only will viewers of the ‘70s to ‘80s series feel some nostalgia, but they will also be introduced to a theme similar to later shows like The Good Doctor, House, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Fans anticipate the ‘Love Boat-ish’ comeback
With the 30-second trailer out, Love Boat fans cannot wait to see what Ryan has in store. “Wow, I think this might actually be a new idea. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a show about a doctor on a cruise ship,” someone gushed, while another expressed their relief at a long-awaited new idea for TV.
Hopefully, Doctor Odyssey get as much attention as Love Boat and Grey’s Anatomy combined, and maybe 9-1-1 viewers can also take a liking to it. “I’m looking forward to this – hope the show doesn’t disappoint,” a curious YouTube user quipped in response to the teaser.
