The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a marine life protection nonprofit, recently named their newly acquired anti-poaching boat after Bob Barker, who, aside from hosting The Price Is Right, was a dedicated animal rights activist. He pioneered campaigns and influenced fans to join in the fight for sea animals.

The M/V Bob Barker will be put to good use in preventing poachers from further depleting endangered marine species with a focus on the Western Hemisphere. According to Sea Shepherd CEO Pritam Singh, the 130-foot sea vehicle will continue Bob’s work of protecting nature.

Pritam noted that Bob was aware of his huge platform and used it to raise awareness, funds, and interest toward better living conditions for animals. His brother, Kent Valandra, also testified to his courage and how Bob gave so freely to his passion.

Bob’s achievements in animal protection

Bob lived true to the cause as a vegetarian and ended every episode of The Price Is Right with the phrase, “This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population—have your pets spayed or neutered.” He also sacrificed a gig as the host for 1987’s Miss USA Pageant because fur was being used.

The late TV personality also founded the DJ&T Foundation as a tribute to his mother, Matilda Valandra, and his wife, Dorothy Jo, who was responsible for millions of dollars in funding animal rescue, parks, and animal neutering efforts around the U.S.
