Richard Simmons’ Final Touching Interview Just Two Days Before His Passing

Richard Simmons’ death came shortly after a significant period in his life when he turned 76 and kicked off his journey back into the spotlight. He granted his last interview on July 11, which was ironically his first since his decade-long hiatus from the public eye.

His exclusive conversation with PEOPLE happened over the phone, and he told the outlet of his dedication to making people happy. Despite being a recluse for 10 years, Richard still reached out to his fans via email, sending as many as a hundred per day. While going through troubles of his own, Richard stayed true to his identity as a beacon of hope even until death.

Richard Simmons’ final interview

After getting diagnosed with cancer and having the basal cell carcinoma removed earlier this year, Richard zeroed in on fans suffering from the same debilitating illness during his daily check-ins, singing and encouraging them as much as he could. He noted that he views himself just as normally as anyone and has never felt like a celebrity, hence his ability to connect with most people.

Richard credited his parents for his arguably inherent willingness to help others, noting that he grew up watching his mom and dad do so. Richard recalled how his mother gave out her clothes, and his father his money despite not earning so much. His existence has positively impacted so many lives, that he will be greatly missed by all.

Richard spent the past few years disguising in public

Richard rose to fame in the ‘80s as a fitness guru, selling millions of tapes, running his own show and releasing books such as Richard Simmons’ Never-Say-Diet Book. He also starred in several TV series including Arrested Development, Amazing Stories, The Larry Sanders Show and General Hospital all while running his fitness studio in Los Angeles.

After winning the hearts of many all over America, Richard suddenly left the spotlight in 2016 and was nowhere to be found. There were rumours of him being held hostage by his housekeeper, however, he debunked the news saying he disappeared due to a bad knee. The late icon admitted to going out in public during these times, but not without his disguise.
