Evans Evans From ‘Bonnie And Clyde’ Married Film Royalty But Liked The Quiet Life

by Dana Daly

Published June 27, 2024

Evans Evans pursued a unique career trajectory

Bonnie and Clyde exploded onto the scenes in 1967, boasting a whirlwind plot told by rich history and talented actors. One memorable performance came from Evans Evans, who maintained a quiet career, married a legend of Hollywood, yet always favored a quiet existence.

The actress was born on November 26, 1932, in the developed yet quiet city of Bluefield, West Virginia. Like several of the most iconic names in cinema, she would get a relatively late start to her career, with her partial filmography beginning around the early ’60s. But everything she worked on, she made count.

All things creepy and thrilling would come to define the actress’s career right from the start. The early years of her acting career include both Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, in season seven and one respectively. This was followed up with 1962’s All Fall Down, directed by the master of action and suspense John Frankenheimer—this name will come back up soon.

Evans played Velma Davis from Bonnie and Clyde the following year; her scene partner was Gene Wilder in his big screen debut, Deadline notes. The two provide a heart-pounding contrast to the titular crime couple and literally get swept up into their felonious spree.

This would be her highest-profile role, but Evans was always content with each gig she took up.

More credits followed Bonnie and Clyde, including Story of a Love Story, The Iceman Cometh, Prophecy, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and more. Circling back in time, she would have an uncredited role in Grand Prix that proved particularly meaningful out of all of them.

That’s because on December 13, 1963, Evans actually married director John Frankenheimer. His extensive filmography includes The Island of Dr. Moreau, French Connection II, Ronin, and, perhaps most famously, The Manchurian Candidate. Despite Evans eventually favoring a quieter work schedule and Frankenheimer maintaining a high-profile career, they remained happily married until his death in 2002 at the age of 72.

Then, 30 years after her final on-screen credit, Evans died on June 16, 2024, aged 91, leaving behind one commendable performance after another and an invaluable part of a cultural touchstone in cinematic history.
