It’s a cultural touchstone that has something for everyone and now, 9 to 5 is getting a remake, produced by Friends icon Jennifer Aniston. Country music icon Dolly Parton, part of the original main cast and the mind behind the subsequent song of the same name, wants to be in this upcoming remake and hopes her former co-stars can join her.
The original 9 to 5 was released in 1980 and starred Parton alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as women swept up in the chance to get even with their boss who is “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot,” the full package, played by Dabney Coleman, who passed away on May 16. Here are Parton’s thoughts on a remake of a film that she is tied so inextricably to.

Alongside Kristin Hahn, Aniston is the co-founder of the production company Echo Films, established in 2008. Last month, Variety confirmed that their company would be producing a reimagining of 9 to 5 for 20th Century Studios.

Parton spoke about the upcoming remake with E! News, recalling, “There was some mention she might want to do 9 to 5, and I said, ‘Oh, that would be great.'”
She went on to say “I’m hoping they use my song and I’m hoping they might find a way to have Lily, Jane and me come back in.” E! News host Justin Sylvester proposed Parton’s goddaughter Miley Cyrus play Parton’s character, Doralee Rhodes. To this, Parton responded, “Wouldn’t she be great? Well, she knows me!”
What to expect from this particular workday
So far, Diablo Cody, whose credits include Juno and Lisa Frankenstein, is tapped to work on the most recent draft of 9 to 5, which is currently in development. Screen Rant reports that the latest iteration will focus on modern issues while also remaining true to the heart of the original’s message of empowerment and triumph in the face of workplace injustice.
By time of writing, no official casting announcements have been made and it is unclear if Aniston herself will also serve as an actor in the film. She has, however, appeared in previous films produced by Echo Films, so some appearance may be expected.
9 to 5 has been the subject of plans for a sequel in the past, with the most prominent rumors concerning a sequel arising in 2018, suggesting the original trio would appear in it.
