The Brat Pack of the ‘80s was a group of young Hollywood stars who often co-stars in coming-of-age movies. Among this clique was Demi Moore, who started her career as a teenager on Silvio Narizzano’s Choices. Decades later, they reunited for a soon-to-be-released documentary, and Demi shared her thoughts about it in a recent interview.
Despite appearing excited in the initial trailer for Brats, Demi wishes she never joined in as she could not experience a physical reunion with the rest of the group because they got interviewed in different spaces. She admitted to having a “great time” but wished Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Rob Lowe, Lea Thompson, Jon Cryer, and others were present.
Interestingly, the Brat Pack members hated their collective name because it made them seem like “we weren’t professionals or didn’t take our work seriously.” It was ascribed to them and popularized by writer David Blum via 1985’s New York magazine cover, and unlike the rest, Demi and Lowe “didn’t attach too much” to the name.
Their name was inspired by an entertainer group from the ‘40s and ‘50s called “The Rat Pack,” which featured Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Angie Dickinson, Dean Martin, and more. There were fan disputes about who was a Brat because Blum, who also stars in the new documentary, simply categorized stars under 25 at the time into the group, including Tom Cruise.
Demi praised McCarthy for a “wonderful job” of telling the Brat Pack story, noting that it was “so good.” She added that the documentary helped to put in perspective every Brat’s unique experience and how the group helped boost their budding career in the ‘80s. She admitted to feeling “really lucky and grateful to have been part of this shift,” just like Andrew, whose career took off thanks to the label.
The Brats will begin streaming on Hulu starting June 13 but will have its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival before public release. Aside from giving the group a sense of reunion, this comeback 40 years later has reportedly helped to settle some discomfort within a few Brats over sensitive topics as he had to travel to each of them for one-on-one interviews.
