Even the most established names in their field can’t know what tomorrow holds. For the award-winning Annie Potts, she believes her prominent work in the cast of Young Sheldon may be the last big project she does as work becomes less reliable and time continues its cruel march.

71-year-old Potts has appeared throughout the Ghostbusters franchise, won a Genie Award for her performance in Heartaches, and was part of the main cast of Designing Women for 163 episodes. Her career spans over four decades, but here is why she calls Young Sheldon her “last rodeo.”

CBS’s coming-of-age sitcom Young Sheldon premiered in 2017 and, set primarily in the ‘90s, serves as a spin-off prequel to The Big Bang Theory. Back in November 2023, it was announced that the show would end after seven seasons, telling its final story in a one-hour series finale premiering on May 16, 2024.

Potts has been a part of the show since day one and jumping from project to project for even longer. But the impending end of this series is realy getting to her emotionally.

“I mean, I love the cast,” she mused. “Wonderful character to play.” She added, “But hey, I’m old, this could be my last rodeo. I mean, I thought about that though, panicked me a little bit. These things are hard to come by, I’ve had a couple, but they were all tough, so yeah.”

Potts has been part of the main cast of several projects, including Goodtime Girls, Love & War, Over the Top, Any Day Now, GCB, and 163 episodes of Designing Women as Mary Jo Shively. But the sting of departure is still as potent as ever as she readies to part ways with Young Sheldon.

Indeed, she nd her co-stars were taken aback by the network’s decision to end the series.

If a show is starting to drag or lag or have a lack of stories or whatever, then you kind of see it coming,” allowed Potts, before adding, “We were totally ambushed by this. I was, anyway.” While season one enjoyed support from some 17 million viewers, there were some dips in viewership, particularly in seasons four and six. However, viewership rose in time for season seven to nearly eight million viewers.
