M. Night Shyamalan Says Bruce Willis’ Family Is “Doing the Best They Can”

M. Night Shyamalan and Bruce Willis have a long history of working together. Willis has formally retired from acting following harrowing aphasia and frontotemporal dementia diagnoses, but director Shyamalan has stayed in the loop with Willis and his family and has updates to share with concerned fans.

Their partnership began in 1999 when Willis starred in Shyamalan’s psychological thriller, The Sixth Sense as child psychologist Malcolm Crowe. The following year, Willis was cast in Shyamalan’s Unbreakable, another thriller film but this one following a superhero. This launched a film series that resulted in the crossover film Glass, released in 2019 and also starring Willis. He also had a cameo in Split.

45-year-old Emma, to whom Willis has been married since 2009, has been balancing the tasks of caring for the Die Hard alum and protecting their daughters from the grief inherent in seeing someone endure a condition like FTD. A source told PEOPLE that Emma “has the biggest support system” as she works on serving as a caregiver for Willis and as an attentive mother to Mabel and Evelyn.

“She is trying to make as many positive memories for them as she can,” the source further claimed. “She wants them to remember Bruce as an amazing, fun dad. She wants them to have the best memories of him.”

Additionally, it is reported that Emma is pursuing writing a book about being a caregiver. By time of writing, there is no official title, but it is expected to hit shelves in 2025 through the publishing imprint The Open Field, which is from a partnership between Penguin Life and Maria Shriver.
