Joy Behar Calls Dolly Parton’s Original ‘Jolene’ Hit ‘Anti-Feminist’ While Endorsing Beyonce’s Version

On Wednesday’s episode of the Behind The Table podcast, The View co-host Joy Behar said she prefers Beyonce’s recently released remake of Dolly Parton’s hit song, “Jolene.” The comedian claimed the original was “anti-feminist, worrying about some good-looking woman taking your man.”

She professed to like Beyonce’s version of “Jolene,” a top song on her new album, Cowboy Carter. “I like the subject of Beyoncé taking over the lyrics. If it’s so easy to take your man, then take him! Beyoncé says, ‘If you take my man, you’re gonna be in a lot of trouble,’ and I say, ‘Go ahead, take my man, take him!’” Behar gushed.

Despite tagging Dolly’s Jolene as “anti-feminist,” Behar acknowledged the award-winning singer as “the best” and clarified that she considers her feminist. The line that stood out from the original was “I’m begging of you, please don’t take my man,” which Beyonce changed to “I’m warnin’ you, don’t come for my man” in her recreated version.

Beyonce also changed Dolly’s final lyric, which reads, “[Your] happiness depends on you, and whatever you decide to do, Jolene,” to, “You don’t want this smoke, so shoot your shot with someone else. You heard me.” Contrary to Behar’s claim, Dolly has mentioned in the past that she avoids labels but is “very supportive of women.” “Does being feminine make me a feminist? Does being common make me a communist?” the country singer asked.

Dolly appears to love Beyonce’s “Jolene” and was even featured in the song’s interlude saying, “Hey, Miss Honey B, it’s Dolly P. You know that hussy with the good hair you sing about? Reminded me of someone I knew back when, except she has flamin’ locks of auburn hair, bless her heart. Just a hair of a different color, but it hurts just the same.”

The 78-year-old also took to Instagram once the album dropped with a sweet note that read, “Wow, I just heard Jolene. Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble, and she deserves it! Love, Dolly P.” Despite Dolly’s approval, some fans expressed their displeasure saying Beyonce “is not country and will never be.”

However, most people supported saying, “We both can love both women and both versions.”

“Some of these comments aren’t passing the vibe check. Dolly anticipated this, which is why she is showing public support,” a follower defended.
