Selena Gomez Wants Fans To “Truly” Know Steve Martin Following Release Of New Documentary

Selena Gomez and Steve Martin, along with Martin Short, have been seeing a lot of each other as they unravel the mysteries of the Arconia in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. But Gomez has been privy to a deeper picture of Martin’s life and in the midst of Martin’s new documentary, she admitted to feeling agonized that many people don’t know the full extent of his remarkable story as well.

The life of the Father of the Bride star takes center stage in STEVE! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces, which was released on Friday. “Steve Martin is one of the most beloved and enigmatic figures in entertainment,” reads its synopsis on Apple TV. “Dive into his extraordinary story from two distinct points of view—past and present—as Martin reflects on how his beginnings led to his unexpectedly fulfilling life today.”

Following the release of STEVE! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces, 31-year-old Gomez took to Instagram to marvel at the extraordinary life her colleague and friend lived. “It pains me to know how many people may not know truly about Steve’s life,” she captioned an image posted to her Instagram Story.

The image in question is a shot of the documentary in question, which was directed by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville. It boasts new interviews with Martin, musings on his music and standup alike, and unseen footage.

Martin, Gomez, and Short have been the dysfunctional yet effective trio of crime solvers in Only Murders in the Building since its 2021 premiere. In October 2023, Hulu renewed the show for a fourth season, which promises to shake things up for the group as the murders penetrate outside of the building.

In that time, the respective actors, who represent different generations and areas of talent, have formed an unlikely and unyielding bond. So much so that Gomez has taken multiple opportunities to offer them high praise.

“I want to thank @stevemartinreally and Marty (who hates social media) for truly being the most kind, gentle, warm and powerful influences in my life,” she said in another tribute post. “You have shown me a level of class, intellect and humor that doesn’t seem to be easy to find anymore. You guys are truly best friends to me forever.”

They all hit it off remarkably well, considering, according to Short, “The first day we shot, I had never met Selena. Because of COVID, we’d only Zoomed. And I was driving to work and I thought, I wonder what Selena’s could be like? I mean, she could be a nightmare. She could be a pop princess nightmare.” In the end, the experience was one Short called “fabulous.”
