The Dollar General store located in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, has temporarily shut its doors following a coordinated walkout by its entire staff. Serving as the general manager for approximately a year, Trina Tribolet, along with five other employees, decided to leave their positions simultaneously after completing their shifts on Friday. The group left messages on the store’s entrance indicating their collective resignation.
Tribolet shared, “This is something we’ve been talking about the last couple months.” She further explained the decision’s timing, “Until Friday night when we walked away, this weekend was my first time off since Christmas.”

Citing reasons for their departure, Tribolet highlighted issues of inadequate pay and excessive workloads. She elaborated on her personal experience, revealing that for several months, she had been working every day of the week. This was attributed to the limited number of paid hours she was permitted to distribute among her team members. Following their resignation, Tribolet plans to take a break for her mental health, while her former colleagues have secured new employment opportunities.

Tribolet expressed that the decision to leave was difficult, particularly given their connection with regular customers who depended on the store. She emphasized the team’s desire for recognition of their efforts. “The regular customers, who visited daily, were a significant part of our day, brightening it considerably. It’s challenging for all involved to not have those interactions anymore,” Tribolet remarked.
Following the mass resignation, the Dollar General store remained unopened for approximately three hours on Saturday morning, as reported by a company representative. The store has since been staffed with new employees.
The representative from Dollar General stated, “We are dedicated to fostering a work environment that supports career development and makes employees feel appreciated and listened to.”
Tribolet pointed out several problems encountered while working at the store but highlighted the food donation policy as the tipping point. She was troubled by the volume of items discarded, despite Dollar General’s efforts to donate food. According to her, the company’s strict donation guidelines meant that only a fraction of surplus food reached those in need.
Reflecting on the impact of these policies, Tribolet shared, “It’s heartbreaking to dispose of products like coffee that hasn’t expired or a box of Lucky Charms that could delight many children, simply because the rules dictate they must be thrown away.” In response, Dollar General’s public relations team affirmed their commitment to Feeding America’s donation guidelines, implying that the company’s practices are in line with established protocols for food donations.
