Liza Minnelli‘s extraordinary ability to captivate audiences with her dynamic performances has solidified her status as an icon in the industry. Born into a family deeply rooted in show business, the daughter of the legendary actress Judy Garland and celebrated film director Vincente Minnelli was exposed to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood from an early age, which undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping her passion for performing arts.
Ahead of her 78th birthday, which Minnelli recently celebrated on March 12, she took a moment to reflect on the journey of her life and career over the past seven and a half decades and her plans for commemorating the special occasion.
In an email shared with People, the actress conveyed her heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support she continues to receive. She also expressed her genuine excitement and joy at reaching such a significant milestone in her life. “I am so grateful for all the good wishes and all the love that comes my way. Not only on my birthday, but always,” Minnelli told the news outlet. “I wish I knew how to act my age. But kids guess what, I have never been this damn old! Just keep going, baby, that’s the secret!”
Minnelli disclosed that her upcoming birthday festivities were poised to be extravagant. “A party is being thrown in my honor by dear friends [pianist] Michael Feinstein and Terrence Flannery,” she added. “There will be food and fabulous music, and I am told to expect a wonderful surprise—my only clue is Elsa Peretti!”
Minnelli has no plans to slow down despite rumors of failing health. She recently wrapped up a collaboration with publisher Rizzoli and author Mark Bozek on a captivating book delving into the lives of fashion photographers Bill Cunningham and Jean-Luce Huré. The book, The Battle of Versailles: The Fashion War of 1973, slated for release in September, features a forward written by Minnelli.
The actress is currently recording music dedicated to upholding the esteemed legacy of her father, who was renowned for directing timeless musical classics such as An American in Paris, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Gigi. “I am recording music again! And I’m involved in an exciting brand collaboration that will be announced soon,” Minnelli confessed. “I’m developing multiple projects based on the intellectual property of my father, tentatively titled: ‘Dreams My Papa Gave Me.’”
