83-Year-Old Beatles Rocker Ringo Starr Shares His Secrets To Healthy Aging

Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr turned 83 last year, and he still looks as toned and fresh as ever. He has prioritized a healthier lifestyle since staying off alcohol over three decades ago and has claimed to be a vegetarian for 25 years now.

Ringo is one to look up to for aging tips, as he has managed to look ageless and remain active after so many years and health challenges. “I watch what I eat. I’ve been vegetarian for the last 25 years,” he told The San Diego Union-Tribune last May. “I think it’s important, and I’m always promoting proper eating.”

The singer-songwriter lived a dangerous lifestyle with a high soda intake and his pocket “loaded with cognac,” however, he turned things around and has no regrets about it. “I go to the gym. I have a trainer who comes to my home three times a week. And I work out myself. On tour, usually I go at least four mornings a week to the gym. So, I think you’ve just got to keep moving and eating right. I do the best I can,” he said.

Being a family man, his love life is just as healthy with his wife of 40 years, Barbara Bach. The couple have no children together but have a blended family of 5 kids from their previous marriages. “I think I love Barbara as much today as I did when we met— and I’m beyond blessed that she loves me and we’re still together,” he once gushed about Bach.

Ringo Starr’s health battles

Ringo suffered health challenges since his appendix ruptured at 6, after which he contracted tuberculosis. He missed out on classroom education for a while and fell into a coma at that young age. During his year-long stay at Liverpool’s Myrtle Street Children’s Hospital, Ringo got to play drums for the first time thanks to a woman who would visit with “percussive maracas, triangles, little drums, and sticks.”

That was the start of Ringo’s love for drums and, eventually, music. “That’s when I fell in love with drums, and I only wanted to be a drummer from then on,” he recalled during an interview with CBC. More recently, the Beatles bandmate suffered from COVID twice, leading him to cancel some performances.
