Iconic stand-up comedian Richard Lewis, celebrated for his razor-sharp wit and unparalleled mastery of self-deprecating humor, sadly passed away on Tuesday, February 27th, at the age of 76, following a heart attack at his residence in Los Angeles. His publicist, Jeff Abraham, officially confirmed the news of his passing.

Yet, beyond his comedic genius and on-screen charisma, Lewis’ legacy extends to the cultural landscape, as he is credited with coining the phrase ‘from hell’, which has found its way into the everyday conversation for millions of people.

The comedian, renowned for his frequent use of the phrase ‘from hell’ in his comedic routines, endeavored to elevate its status by ensuring its inclusion in Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations in 2002, following its appearance in an episode of the American sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Reflecting on his use of the quote, Lewis disclosed in a 2008 discussion with Interview magazine that his consistent incorporation of it into his performances played a significant role in establishing him as the primary advocate. “The truth of the matter is that whatever gift I have as a comedian, most of it was in the phrase ‘from hell,'” he told the publication. “I’m credited with popularizing that phrase because I felt victimized by everything.”

Friends and colleagues pay tribute to Richard Lewis after news of his death

After Lewis’ passing, a number of his close friends and associates have expressed their deep condolences through heartfelt tributes. Larry David, a longtime friend and the creator of Curb Your Enthusiasm, offered reflections on Lewis’ life in an official statement to mourn the loss of his dear friend. “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital, and for most of my life, he’s been like a brother to me,” he wrote. “He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today, he made me sob, and for that, I’ll never forgive him.”

Cheryl Hines, Lewis’ Curb Your Enthusiasm co-star, also took to Instagram to share poignant memories of his time on the beloved American sitcom, highlighting his warm and affectionate demeanor. “He would take time to tell the people he loved what they meant to him — especially in recent years,” she wrote, “In between takes on Curb, he would tell me how special I was to him and how much he loved me. To be loved by Richard Lewis. A true gift.”
