Wonder Woman’s controversial black pants and matching leather jacket outfit debuted in 2010’s Wonder Woman issue #600. The costume was met with pushback for being “impractical” and seductive, thanks to the bustier theme. Per recent news, the look will be returning to Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s Wonder Woman #9, which will hit the shelves in May.
This new series will feature Wonder Woman Diana exploring new adventures as well as nostalgia, all depicted by artist Julian Totino Tedesco. “The ultimate test! As Sovereign’s grip on Wonder Woman’s psyche tightens, she retreats into the arms of Steve Trevor,” the description reads. “Will their love for the ages prove victorious over the web of Amazon lies weaved in Man’s World? Plus, Trinity lets the dogs out!”
Artist Tedesco’s variant cover puts a spin on the highly-criticized skin-tight wear from the old issue by Amanda Conner, Gail Simone, Geoff Johns, and others. He intends to let younger fans experience some of Diana’s most audacious outfits and appreciate the formerly-scorned style.
Tedesco has worked on other costumes like Wonder Woman’s ‘60s all-white Mod look and her ‘90s biker look which will feature in the upcoming March #7 issue by writer Tom King, in collaboration with Guillem March. #7 will feature Superman, Clark, and Diana on “a thrilling journey into space to get a birthday gift for their dear friend Bruce.”
Several DC superhero characters underwent major changes in their costume and plot arcs in the ‘90s. After losing her title to rival Artemis of the Bana-Mighdall, Diana kept fighting without the famous moniker and outfit; however, she opted for a different look featuring black boots, gloves, shorts, and a blue jacket.
The recreation for #7 is sparking conversation among DC fans, many of whom think it would have been better fitting for Wonder Girl Donna Troy. They felt the ‘90s style made Diana look more like a street brawler than the magnificent Amazon princess she was meant to be. Regardless, the outfit, which is similar to Wonder Girl’s black and white-starred, skin-tight look, will feature in the upcoming issue’s variant cover.
