Emmy Russell shares her reasons for deciding to take part in ‘American Idol’

“I just wanted to be around other young creatives like me,” Russell told the news outlet. “I think I just like the hard work of it, and it was outside the traditional way that my grandma had — which is a publishing deal, then get the record deal.”

She also mentioned that participating in the show’s audition process pushed her beyond her usual boundaries and challenged her to embrace new experiences. “I wanted something out there and fun, and it just forced me to do it,” Russell admitted. “Because I’m so shy and scared of going for it.”

The 25-year-old showcased her musical prowess during her debut performance at the prestigious Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on April 13, 2023, in tribute to her grandmother’s first-year posthumous birthday. Teaming up with Lukas Nelson, son of the legendary Willie Nelson, she delivered a poignant rendition of “Lay Me Down,” the very song that marked the inaugural collaboration between her grandmother and Willie Nelson. The performance was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the audience.

Russell couldn’t hide her excitement about the experience as she eagerly took to her Instagram to share her joy and gratitude with her followers. “It’s pretty cool to start your career by thanking the person, my grandma, and honoring her by this being my first time alone with a guitar since her passing. I used to run from my family heritage and wanna make my own path. I feel a deep conviction to thank, accept, and celebrate her, cause she believed in me from the start before anyone did,” she captioned the post. “Not ashamed anymore. She was never ashamed of me… I’m a granddaughter, and I’m Emmy… it’s all a part of me! This is the start of a beautiful journey. Couldn’t be more excited.”
