‘Jeopardy!’ Contestants Stumped Over Johnny Cash Question

Jeopardy! contestants Alex Gordon, Ed Petersen, and Suzanne Goldlust missed their chance while competing to make it to the Tournament of Champions. During the latest round of “Jeopardy!’s Champions Wildcard,” they were tasked with providing the correct answer to the clue, “’It was kind of a prodding to myself to play it straight,’ said Johnny Cash of this 1956 hit.”

Sadly, their responses were nearly right save for the letter “I,” which cost them their points. Fans were disappointed by the loss and took to social media to share their thoughts. “Tonight we learned there is no I in Jeopardy,” a Reddit user commented. “I’m not being snarky, but I don’t get this,” another added.

What was the answer to the Johnny Cash ‘Jeopardy!’ question?

The correct answer to the question was Cash’s “I Walk The Line.” However, Alex, Ed, and Suzanne answered, “Walk The Line,” leaving out “I.”

“Okay. It was an understandable miss in Final Jeopardy because the film changed the title for the known song. Hell, before the film came out, I knew people who referred to the song without ‘I’ as the title,” a viewer wrote, referring to the James Mangold-directed film Walk The Line.

Another called out the game show for deliberately not cutting the players some slack as they had an idea of the answer. “That was some big-time trolling by Jeopardy. They’re betting you remember the movie title and not the full title,” they noted. However, someone else thought it was fair that they lost, saying, “The title of the song is what it is. A film using part of something from a title isn’t an excuse.”

A November episode also had a similar plot with another country music-related question that ended in forfeited points. The question reads, “This country superstar’s ‘Friends In Low Places’ was named CMA Single of the Year in 1991,” with a photo of award-winning singer-songwriter Garth Brooks; however, the buzzer went off before any contestant could answer.

This time, fans were more surprised that no answer was given for such an easy clue. “How do these three not know who Garth Brooks is?? Even if you aren’t a country fan, he’s one of the most well-known music artists from the 90s,” a baffled user wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
