Pop culture and social empowerment icon Sinéad O’Connor died unexpectedly on July 26, 2023, when she was just 56. Due to the sudden and premature nature of her passing, speculation arose as to what might have caused it. Now, a London coroner’s report has arisen stating that Sinéad died of natural causes.

The report was shared on Tuesday by the London Inner South Coroner’s Court. The court then announced that its involvement in Sinéad’s case is officially over. Sinéad had been found unresponsive in her home in Herne Hill, South London.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” her family announced in a July statement. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” The coroner in Lambeth was notified, though “no medical cause of death was given,” according to the Coroner’s Court website, and so the coroner arranged for an autopsy to be performed.

After the death of Sinéad, a private funeral was held at Bray, County Wicklow on August 8. Her family invited the public to pay tribute when the funeral cortege passed the seafront; thousands answered the call.

Tributes poured in online from Jamie Lee Curtis, composer Bear McCreary, Janelle Monáe, Amanda Palmer, Golden Globe winner Toni Collette, and many more.

In life, Sinéad was known for her activism and protest movements as much as for her singing. While on SNL, she gave a particularly passionate condemnation of the Catholic Church for allegations of abusing children; her actions drew criticism from religious institutions and celebrities alike.

In his own tribute to the artist, English singer Morrissey slammed those who were mourning Sinéad, saying, “You praise her now only because it is too late. You hadn’t the guts to support her when she was alive and she was looking for you.”
