A woman took to social media to express frustration over having to spend “99% of her life” explaining what her name means to people. Thankfully, the dissatisfied lady has unofficially changed the name to avoid awkward reactions from everyone she meets.
As explained on Reddit, the woman’s mother named her after an ’80s song by Mr. Mister called “Kyrie” while medicated during her birth via cesarean section. “My name is Kyrie-E-Leison. That’s my whole first name. Hyphenated and all,” she wrote.
Kyrie-E-Lesion’s name has affected her life
Doing “normal things” like getting her license, applying for jobs, and doing paperwork has been more challenging for Kyrie-E-Leison, prompting her to shorten it to Kyrie— which people have been mispronouncing. “It’s not pronounced Kai-Ree, btw it’s pronounced Key-Ree,” she clarified. “I didn’t know how to spell my full name until 3rd grade.”

Her mother’s middle name, as well as her sister’s, also correspond interestingly. “My middle name is Dusk. My sister’s middle name is Day, and my mother’s middle name is Dawn,” she added. Other Reddit users gave their opinions mostly about similar names they had heard.
Reactions to Kyrie’s full name
Someone replied that they knew someone else named Kyrie, which is a “nice-sounding name” without the hyphens. “The hyphens seem like they’d be cumbersome! Have you ever considered just changing it to Kyrie Eleison?” they asked. Another added that they bear the same short form, Kyrie, but from “Valkyrie.”
Someone explained how the same song also inspired her former boss to name her daughter “Kyrie, pronounced kee-ree-ay.”
“I have never heard this song, and I am older than her daughter. I have no idea what y’all are referencing, but somehow, pronouncing Kyrie as kee-ree-ay seems like way less of a burden than whatever the heck your full name is!” they added.
