After a 30-year career as a transcriptionist and word processor, she made the bold decision to retire and embark on a new chapter. Payne conveyed that her pursuit of a master’s degree stemmed from a desire for relevance and personal development, even though it was not easy. “I took it day by day, I knew that I was bettering myself and my family, and I was doing something I enjoyed and something constructive,” she explained. “I was improving my life. Every day, I try to do something to improve my life and those around me.”

She recently secured a new position at a magazine in Houston, and she revealed that retirement is not on the horizon for her. Payne envisions actively applying the knowledge and skills she has acquired through her academic pursuits in her current role. “It’s not my intention to stop work,” she confessed.
