‘Wizard Of Oz’ Theory Changes Everything We Know About Glinda The Good Witch

In a 2017 episode of the WMX Presents series, In Theory, Glinda the Good Witch is portrayed as the villain of The Wizard Of Oz, and her intentions of leading Dorothy on the journey were not well-intended.

Oz was ruled by Glinda, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Wicked Witch of the East, and the Wizard. It is likely that Glinda orchestrated Dorothy’s animosity towards her competition to get them out of the way without suspicion.

Glinda may have manipulated Dorothy

Glinda gives Dorothy the ruby slippers to pit her against the Wicked Witch of the West and then lies that only the Wizard can help her get home. The Wizard asks Dorothy to get the Witch’s broom, which can only happen if Dorothy kills her.

Contrary to her initial claim, Glinda arrives to show Dorothy the way home after the Wizard leaves Oz. The supposedly Good Witch ended up removing her competition by manipulating Dorothy and her friends to do her bidding. It is scary to realize Glinda may have preyed on a teenage girl in danger to have her way.

Broadway hit gives a spin to Glinda’s character

The Broadway hit Wicked gave a background perspective into the witches’ and the Wizard’s past. Glinda, who goes by Galinda, and the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, were roommates at Shiz University. Elphaba talks Galinda into accompanying her to Emerald City to see the wizard who is behind the corruption in Oz.

Elphaba fights against the Wizard and is ostracized for her rebellion; however, Galinda begins working for him and gains the moniker “Glinda the Good” as an example for Oz residents to follow to conform. Galinda then learns the details of Elphaba’s sister’s death and helps Elphaba escape. She is neither a villain nor a hero, as she lies to the citizens that Elphaba is dead.
