In addition to Shannen Doherty’s health challenges, the actress hasn’t been lucky in her love life, either, as she has experienced quite a number of failed marriages. Her first, to Ashley Hamilton in 1993, was short-lived, followed by a brief union with Rick Salomon in 2002 that ended in annulment after only nine months.
In 2011, she entered her third marriage with photographer Kurt Iswarienko, but this relationship also faced its share of difficulties, ultimately resulting in a divorce. Recently, Doherty revealed a surprising discovery about her third husband in a podcast while shedding light on the reasons behind their separation.
In a recent episode of her Let’s Be Clear podcast, Doherty shared her brain surgery experience and noted that she learned about her husband’s affair a few hours before undergoing the surgery. “I had brain surgery, which was the most frightening thing I have ever been through in my entire life, I didn’t think I was going to make it,” she shared. “I was positive that I was gonna die, and the best-case scenario in my head if I didn’t die was that I would lose the ability to walk or to talk.”
“I went into that surgery early in the morning, and I went in after I found out that my marriage was essentially over, that my husband had been carrying on an affair for two years,” she added. “I couldn’t go into that surgery with him there. I felt so betrayed. At the end of the day, I just felt so incredibly unloved by someone I was with for 14 years, by someone I loved with all my heart.”
The 52-year-old stated that she eventually filed for divorce, a development that made her feel like a failure. “It was embarrassing. I am horrified that I can’t keep a relationship together. I think it is a reflection me, but this one I think is on him,” Doherty explained. “I’ve failed three times at marriage, but I still believe in love.”
Doherty explained that although it wasn’t easy to step away from the relationship, she took the bold step later on. “I didn’t walk away right away. I couldn’t. I was so confused,” she said. “I was also on steroids and a lot of stuff from brain surgery because they didn’t want my brain to swell.
“I finally had to come to that hard truth and file for divorce,” the Beverly Hills, 90210 star added.
