‘Frasier’ Confirms If Niles Is Dead Or Alive

Fans were disappointed to learn that David Hyde Pierce would not reprise his role as Niles in the Paramount+ Frasier reboot. This raised questions as to whether Hyde’s character— who was a focal point in the original series — was still alive.

In the revival, Kelsey Grammer is back as Dr. Frasier Crane, but this time has returned to Boston to be near his firefighter son. Since Niles is not a character to be overlooked, the new series satisfied fans’ curiosity about his absence by hinting the brothers are not on speaking terms.

The chance of Pierce making a cameo is not impossible, although the actor blatantly refused the idea of a remake as he simply “wasn’t interested.” The new season features Olivia, played by Toks Olagundoye, talking about sibling rivalry, during which the camera focuses on Frasier. This, in addition to Niles’ son not mentioning anything about his father’s death, should answer fans’ many questions.

It’s hard to say if it would have been more effective to have the Niles character deceased, as being estranged from his older brother leaves room for more plot twists, especially because Frasier now spends a lot of time with his nephew, David. Fans hope to see an episode that directly addresses their concerns about the brothers as the show continues.

Does David Hyde Pierce have plans to return?

Pierce’s decision to stay off the classic’s continuation has greatly affected the plot, and if he never changes his mind, it might also impact viewers’ perception of Frasier’s ability to maintain relationships, seeing that he has now just sought to reconnect with his son, Freddy, after many years. Co-creator and writer Joe Cristalli admitted that the actor’s decision put them in “a tough position.”

“Everybody wants to see him as Niles, but he doesn’t want to step back into those shoes,” Joe said. “He felt like he didn’t have anything new to bring to the character.”
