It’s been a blast from the past for everyone involved in this latest round of Dancing With the Stars featuring Barry Williams and his professional dance partner, Peta Murgatroyd. On Tuesday night’s episode, Williams incorporated an Easter Egg referencing an iconic moment from his time on The Brady Bunch.
DWTS is in the midst of its thirty-second season, which premiered on September 26. It is the first to air live on both its original network of ABC and on Disney+, hosted by Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum Alfonso Ribeiro. So far, Williams and Murgatroyd have danced the foxtrot, cha-cha-cha, and tango, managing to move on to the next round each time. Recently, his ensemble held particular meaning.
Barry Williams incorporates a ‘Brady Bunch’ Easter Egg into his latest ‘DWTS’ performance
In a program as visual as DWTS, everything right down to a dancer’s appearance is part of the performance. On Tuesday, Williams and his partner danced a pasodoble, or “double step,” a kind of military step used by infantry troops that has generated a whole dance style, most often accompanied by music associated with bullfighting.

That’s where the door opens for Williams’ Easter Egg. In keeping with the dance’s background, he was garbed in a matador costume, while Murgatroyd played the role of the lover, cape, and bull. If anyone is getting deja vu, that’s because this is Williams’ second time in a matador outfit for television.
Jump back to season five, episode one of The Brady Bunch. His character, Greg Brady, was approached to become a rock star under the stage name Johnny Bravo, which would also have him wear… a matador outfit! Confirming this as a deliberate nod to The Brady Bunch, Williams told EW, “You’ll certainly be seeing [an alter ego] for the Pasa Doble,” adding, “There was an episode [of The Brady Bunch] that involved fitting a suit and that was actually a matador coat. And I will be playing a matador in this dance.”

Unfortunately for Greg, it turned out he was only recruited because he happened to perfectly fit that matador outfit. But it still fits Williams to this day; in fact, this pasodoble was a high point for the pair, netting them their first eights of the season and winning them a combined score of 24 points. This is their highest combined score from the main three judges of the season.
It’s been an uphill battle at times, but Williams has said “I’m having the time of my life.”
“Imagine at 69, I’m competing with 17-year-olds on this amazing show,” he marveled, “this ‘competition’ and a live band and singers and talented, world-class dancers and learning a new song every week and actually moving forward.” But it might all be for naught if he fails to surpass his TV sister Maureen McCormick. Sometimes, it’s just that personal.
