Meryl Streep and her ex-husband, Don Gummer, recently came forward to reveal their six-year separation, after celebrating their would-have-been 45th anniversary in September. The estranged duo tied the knot months after Meryl lost her actor boyfriend, John Cazale, to cancer in 1978.
Although it is not known if they are simply separated, or legally divorced, a representative confirmed the shocking development to PEOPLE magazine. “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” they noted.
Meryl wore her wedding band days ago
The actress attended the 2023 Princesa de Asturias Awards last Friday wearing her wedding ring. She has also made previous public appearances wearing the band, however, Meryl and Don last stepped out as a couple in 2018.

Being two fiercely private celebrities, Don and Meryl’s split came as a surprise to the public however, there were rumors of infidelity in 2014 that led to the couple’s decision to stay apart. They both share four children, three of whom are actresses. Their first son, Henry Wolfe, is a musician and father of two.
She allegedly cheated with Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson made a claim in his decade-old biography that he had an affair with Meryl in 1987 while filming Ironweed. The actress denied the reports, which allegedly happened nine years into her marriage. “The book opened old wounds and that has led to bitter fights. Now, their marriage is struggling,” a source shared at the time.
They also revealed Don’s displeasure at Meryl’s lack of attention to their marriage. “Don used to joke that Meryl works so much he never sees her. Now I don’t think he’s joking anymore,” they added. “He’s demanded she slow down, and friends fear that if she doesn’t, their once-strong marriage could crumble.”
