Commercial From The ’50s Shows Just How Cool Fridges Were Back Then

by Peace A

50s fridges

The ‘50s was a time known for cool cars, great music, and growing technology, though far from what we have today. However, a video from Historic Vids on Twitter showed a 1956 commercial displaying a refrigerator that had people questioning how it looked more advanced than what we have now.

Although it did not have the same aesthetic allure of today’s fridges per touchscreen features, built-in TV, and the like, the ad showed practical uses of the appliance, like a fruit drawer that pulls down and out so you can have a good view of what is available.

The actress in the ad described each part of the refrigerator with clear demonstrations of how to use them. “It tilts down to show you your supply at a glance, and it also lifts out, so you can take it over to the sink when there’s a fresh supply to be washed and put away,” she said, showing off the window hydrator for fruits.

The fridge also has shelves to help remove food neatly without fear of it toppling over. This is perfect for late-night meal steals, as slipping out leftover food is less cumbersome.

Reactions to the old refrigerator display

The video garnered several reactions from Twitter users and viewers on YouTube. Some joked about wanting to replace their modern fridge with the 1956 Frigidaire, while others simply noted how it was better. “Pretty much the only advancement we’ve made since then, is a water and ice dispenser on the front door,” someone wrote. “Oh, and a touch screen w/ wifi connectivity, so you can inconveniently browse the internet while deciding which beverage to grab. Nice.”

Another user was impressed by the “slide out shelves” wishing it was a present feature in the advanced refrigerators. “Such an awesome idea is missing from all fridges today,” they noted. The two-minute commercial posted to YouTube a decade ago also garnered almost half a million views and hundreds of comments. “Literally better than any fridge I’ve seen today. Probably lasted for 40 years, too,” a viewer wrote two years ago.
