Arnold Schwarzenegger recently expressed deep remorse and regret over an extramarital affair that played a pivotal role in the divorce from his ex-wife, Maria Shriver. The couple exchanged vows on April 26, 1986, and welcomed four children during the course of their marriage.
However, their marriage took a dramatic turn when a highly publicized scandal emerged in 2011, exposing the actor as the biological father of a child born to Mildred Baena, their family’s housekeeper, and this led to the couple’s decision to announce their separation in May 2011.
In an interview with People, the 76-year-old revealed that his affair with Baena was a huge mistake on his part. “It’s just my f**k-up,” Schwarzenegger admitted to the news outlet. Also, In his Netflix documentary, Arnold, the actor disclosed that his infidelity greatly impacted his family.
“I thought my heart stopped, ‘Yes, Maria. Joseph is my son.’ She was obviously crushed by that,” he stated. “I have caused enough pain for my family because of my f***-up, everyone had to suffer. Maria had to suffer, the kids had to suffer, Joseph, his mother, everyone. I’m going to have to live with that for the rest of my life.”
Schwarzenegger revealed that despite the betrayal caused by his infidelity, he still maintains a deep commitment to his ex-wife and children. He stated that both he and Shriver decided to work things out, especially for the sake of their children.
“We never left the [first] chapter. Because remember, it’s not like we had a feud. We didn’t have a fight. It’s just my f***** up, right? We always made it very clear that the kids should not suffer because of that,” he told People. “And she has her things, her relationship, I have mine, but we always communicate about the kids, about the holidays, about birthday parties and Mother’s Day parties and Christmas. My chapter with Maria will continue on forever. Even though it’s a different relationship, there’s no reason for me to feel anything other than love for her.”
