Faye Dunaway attended the Cannes Film Festival in France, where her new documentary Faye premiered before its debut on HBO. Alongside the Bonnie and Clyde star was director Laurent Bouzereau and her son, Liam Dunaway O’Neill, who granted interviews in the tell-all film about his mom.
Faye gave insight into Faye’s controversial behavior, citing her struggle with bipolar disorder as a factor, but not an excuse. It also explained why the actress has hardly taken to the spotlight in recent years due to her mental health condition.
In the documentary, Faye, the actress openly took responsibility for her past actions. She highlighted her efforts to “take care of it” by going to “a group of doctors who analyzed my behavior and gave me prescriptions for pills they thought would be good for me.” Faye has been associated with being difficult to work with by her co-stars, including Bette Davis, who once told Johnny Carson that she was “impossible” and “uncooperative.”
The 83-year-old also expressed her gratitude for medicine, which has helped her become a better person. The documentary gives a peek into her childhood and career, from making a screen debut in 1967’s The Happening to starring in hits like Mommie Dearest, China Town, Little Big Man, and many more.
Joining Faye in the new release were industry colleagues like Sharon Stone, Mickey Rourke, director James Gray, and her son, Liam, who all spoke about her from their perspective. Her son shared that in her mother’s quest for fame, she lost herself, and after finding fame, she wanted her “normal” life back.
Faye adopted Liam with her photographer ex-husband Terry O’Neill and showed up at the Cannes Film Festival alongside his beau, McKinzie Roth. He matched with Faye in a similar black suit and white shirt but threw on a black tie to compliment his ensemble.
