Jimmy And Rosalynn Carter ‘Coming To An End’ As They Battle Different Health Challenges

Former US President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn have been together for almost eight decades. The couple, who are both in their 90s, have been battling different health challenges, with the former President now in hospice care.

Their grandson Jason Carter, who is chairman of the Carter Center’s Board of Trustees and an attorney, told USA TODAY recently that his grandparents “are coming to an end as we know,” referring to their old age. He further assured that Jimmy and Rosalynn are happy as they spend their final years together.

In May, the Carters disclosed that Rosalynn was diagnosed with dementia; however, Jason was pleased to share that his grandparents are still very much in love and enjoying their final times together. “They are happy. They are together. They are at home. They’re in love, and I don’t think anyone gets more than that,” he explained. “I mean, it’s a perfect situation for this time in their lives.”

He added that while Jimmy faces “really significant physical challenges,” he spends time watching baseball games and seeing family regularly. “They’re both doing as well as can be expected,” Jason noted. The couple celebrated their 77th marriage anniversary in July at the same place in Georgia, where they exchanged their vows.

President Joe Biden sends his well wishes

Jason shared that the current USA President Joe Biden and Jimmy Carter have been close friends who “still communicate today on a relatively regular basis.” Joe has written to the former President to let him know he thinks of him. “Their ability to stay grounded in who they are, despite all of the things that they’ve done in their life, is remarkable,” Jason said, referring to what his grandfather and the President have in common.

“I think, frankly, Biden has that same kind of connection to who he was in, like simpler and more humble times despite having spent his entire life in Washington,” he continued. Ahead of Jimmy’s 99th birthday in October, the Carter Center asked the public to share their wishes, which will feature in a digital mosaic. “President Carter has dedicated his life to making the world a better place, and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to send him love and to thank him for all he has done,” CEO of Carter Center, Paige Alexander, announced.
