Al Roker Celebrates First Grandparents’ Day With Granddaughter Sky

Sunday, September 10 marked Grandparents’ Day, a national celebration dedicated not just to grandparents but also their unique bond with their grandchildren. This year, Al Roker is celebrating Grandparents’ Day in style with his granddaughter, Sky Clara.

This is 69-year-old Roker’s first year as a grandfather, Sky having just been born in July of this year. Sky is the first child of Roker’s eldest daughter Courtney and her husband Wes. Roker celebrated Sky’s birth and, most recently, this special day for grandparents and grandchildren, with adorable tributes on Instagram.

“My first #grandparentsday as a #poppop,” celebrated Roker on Sunday, “thanks to @ouichefroker @thatteacherwhodjs and of course, Sky Clara.” The post is accompanied by a series of photos starring Grandpa Roker and Sky, or exclusively Sky.

Sky has had a starring role on Roker’s social media page since her birth two months ago. “I could look into this face all day,” he said in an earlier post, adding, “But then, little Sky Clara wouldn’t get to eat, so I eventually had to give her back to Mommy and Daddy.” In another post, he marveled at the all too real passage of time, saying in a photo post, “Here’s to my little Sky Clara being here 2 months. That went fast.” On August 20, Roker called Sky the “best #birthdaypresent,” having celebrated his own birthday not long after first meeting his new granddaughter.

Traditionally – and per Congress as of 1978 – the Sunday after Labor Day has marked Grandparents’ Day, but Roker has taken to celebrating every day. Within days of Sky being born, Roker was gushing about her on Instagram. His first celebratory post reads, “And then this little girl came into my life. Welcome to the world, Sky Clara Laga. In love all over again. Thank you, Courtney and Wes for such a perfect blessing. You baby is beautiful. Already planning the ways to spoil her and then hand her back.”

Roker has a lot to celebrate with his sizable family that appears to have stayed close over the years. “The best gift is when they’re all together, especially as they get older,” said Roker on the TODAY Show last Father’s Day. He is a father of three to Courtney Roker Laga, 36; Leila Roker, 24; and Nick Roker, 20. Courtney is a culinary content manager and recipe developer for Chefman and Chef IQ; in April, she revealed she and dad Roker would be collaborating on a cookbook together.

Perhaps some recipes will be baby food, now!
