Adult Reboot Of ‘The Flintstones’ Called ‘Bedrock’ Is Coming To TV

The Flintstones ended back in 1966, but fans will soon get to return to the Stone Age in a modern time thanks to Bedrock, an upcoming adult reboot of the beloved cartoon. Warner Bros. Animation first announced the project back in 2021 and now, the show has much of its cast assembled.

Bedrock will find a home with Fox, joining the network’s lineup of adult animated programs that includes The Simpsons and Family Guy. As of this spring, Fox has officially ordered a pilot for Bedrock. The series will offer fans of the original series a continuation of the stories of their favorite cartoon characters. Here’s what to expect.

Fans of ‘The Flintstones’ are invited back to Bedrock

Deadline writes that Bedrock rejoins the Flintstone and Rubble families twenty years since the original show’s finale. By that point, Fred is ready to retire from Slate Rock and Gravel Company. His daughter Pebbles, meanwhile, is ready to start her own career. But just as the family readies for big milestones, the world around them is changing too: this is no longer the Stone Age. They find themselves at the doorstep of the Bronze Age.

To an extent, this is Pebbles’s story, and leading the cast as the young Flintstone daughter is Elizabeth Banks, known for playing the eccentric Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games films. She also played Gail Abernathy-McKadden in the Pitch Perfect movie, and had a task directing, producing, and acting in 2019’s Charlie’s Angels.

Banks has gone on to keep potential viewers on the loop regarding what they can expect from this modern Stone Age story.

‘Bedrock’ will be family-friendly… to an extent

Working closely with Fox and Warner Bros. Animation, Banks provided TV Line an update on Bedrock‘s progress and trajectory. “We’re still in development,” she shared, adding, “we’re working on it…I think we still want it to be for co-viewing [by parents with their kids]. It will have adult themes, like all the greats — just like The Simpsons or South Park — but ‘family-ish friendly.’ I mean, I let my kids watch South Park…. [chuckles].” Banks is also serving as executive producer, along with Max Handelman.

Regarding the cast roster, she’s joined by Stephen Root as Fredi, Amy Sedaris as Wilma, Nicole Byer playing Betty, Joe Lo Truglio as Barney, and Manny Jacinto voicing Bamm-Bamm.

Fox is continuing to maintain a lineup of animated programs; the network is continuing shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons, while also adding Krapopolis, Grimsburg, Housebroken, and The Great North to its lineup.
