Gwyneth Paltrow’s Daughter Rocks Her Mom’s Controversial Oscars Gown From 2002

Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter, Apple Martin, has undoubtedly inherited her famous mother’s impeccable sense of style. During a recent question and answer session on her Instagram story, Gwyneth Paltrow addressed a fan’s question about whether her daughter ever wears pieces from her personal fashion collection.

In response, the Goop founder delightedly shared a snapshot of Apple, striking a pose in the sheer Alexander McQueen gown which she previously rocked to the 2002 Oscars. The photo features Apple wearing a big smile while resting one hand under her chin and the other confidently placed on her hip.

When Paltrow wore the dress back in 2002, it sparked a wide range of opinions due to its sheer and nude appearance. While some criticized it as inappropriate, labeling the look a fashion disaster, others applauded her confidence and admired her deviation from the traditional red-carpet norms.

During a 2003 Q&A session with Goop, the 50-year-old  defended her choice of the daring look, although she acknowledged that she could have made some alternative styling decisions. “There were a few issues. I still love the dress itself, but I should have worn a bra, and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less makeup,” Paltrow admitted. “Then, it would have worked as I wanted it to — a little bit of punk at the Oscars.”

Paltrow seemed to have moved past the criticism as she revealed in Vogue’s Life in Looks video series that her fashion sense at the time was more advanced than the era.

“Everybody really hated (the dress), by the way, but I think it’s kind of dope. I’m into it,” Paltrow confessed. “I had a weird hangover about it for a while because people were really critical. I think at the time, it was too goth. I think people thought it was too hard. So I think it sort of shocked people. But I like it.”
