Recently, American Idol fans expressed their displeasure with the show and vowed not to watch the series any longer if a country singer wins this year’s competition. While it is true that the show has had its fair share of country singers like Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, and Scotty McCreery, this is not a peculiar case as other singing competition shows such as The Voice have also had many country-leaning contestants over the years.
However, most viewers feel that it is time for American Idol to showcase a broader range of musical genres. Also, fans recalled the condescending attitude of Judge Katy Perry during an episode of the show and clamored that the judges of the show be replaced by new ones.
American Idol Fans Criticize Katy Perry
American Idol fans expressed their disapproval of judge Katy Perry’s behavior on the show. On the Monday episode of the show, Katy was accused of acting rudely towards contestant Wé Ani whom she failed to give any feedback on after her performance.

Viewers accused Katy of “doing Wé dirty” by expressing shock and surprise when Wé was picked as the last person to proceed to the top 12. A fan took to Reddit to comment, “Katy was hands down rude from the face she made (that at first, I read as disbelief over Wé’s incredible performance), to go on and on about voting for your favorite contestant. It was incredibly unprofessional.”
“Wé treated rudely. After her performance, instead of giving feedback, Katy reminds everyone how important it is to vote.” Another fan noted
“I totally had the same interpretation as you,” a user wrote. “I love Wé and just thought the judges, Katy especially, did her dirty. Her expression was definitely WTF.”
American Idol fans are tired of the spotlight on country music singers
Also, some American Idol fans revealed on Reddit that the repeated emphasis on country music is becoming tiresome as the current season of the show features several contestants, such as Colin Stough and MaryBeth Byrd, with a country music background.
“I miss when there was more diversity in the show, and anyone could really win. The past few years of the show have been heavily focused on country artists, this year seems a little more balanced, but I guess we’ll see how it plays out,” a fan wrote. “I’d love to see them do a pop only, r&b only, or rock only season and experiment with some things but I doubt that will happen.”
