The friendship between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson might be even more special than previously thought. During a recent appearance on Kelly Ripa‘s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, McConaughey shared that he and Harrelson may actually be related by blood, although he expressed some reluctance to fully confirm the speculation.
The 53-year-old made the revelation when Ripa brought up the topic of great romances and singled out his enduring friendship with Harrelson, particularly in light of their upcoming project, Brother From Another Mother.
Matthew McConaughey talks about their friendship
“Where I start and where he ends—and where he starts and I end—has always been a murky line, and that’s part of our bromance, right?” McConaughey told the host. “For example, my kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew, etcetera, etcetera. And you see pictures of us, and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”

McConaughey also stated that he started reflecting on his connection with Harrelson after an incident involving his mother. “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families,” he added. “And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”
Matthew McConaughey says that the incident led to some investigation
McConaughey revealed that her mom’s admission made them curious, and they decided to investigate the matter. “[We] did some math and found out that his dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce,” McConaughey said.
McConaughey further disclosed that, following some investigation, they found out that both his mom and Harrelson’s dad could have known each other. “There’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment,” he explained.
However, when asked about the possibility of running a DNA test, McConaughey revealed that he is not considering it too seriously. This is what we’re on the precipice of now. “It’s a little easier for Wood to say, ‘Come on, let’s do it,’ because what’s the skin in it for him?” McConaughey replied to host Kelly Ripa. “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take the chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re telling me my dad may not be my dad of 53 years’ and believe in it? I got a little more skin in the game.”
