Jay Leno has experienced a series of unfortunate incidents with his motor vehicles in recent times. Recently, the comedian joined Dana Carvey and David Spade on the Fly on the Wall podcast to discuss his recovery from a car fire and motorcycle accident. The 72-year-old suffered third-degree burns on his face and body from the car fire and multiple broken bones from the motorcycle accident.
Despite the potentially life-threatening incidents, Leno is now fully recovered and in good spirits, but the injuries were so severe that he required reconstructive surgery, which included the addition of new body parts. “This is a brand-new ear,” he revealed during the podcast. “When you get burned in a fire, ears are like paper. They’re so thin, it just goes up.”
Leno appeared on the TODAY Show with Hoda Kotb, where he shared details about his car fire accident that occurred in December. At the time of the accident, he was working on a 1907 White Steam Car, which was part of his personal classic car collection. While clearing a clogged fuel line by blowing air through it, gasoline sprayed on his face, and the pilot light ignited, causing his face to catch fire.
Leno spent several weeks at the Grossman Burn Clinic in LA and continued treatment at home. He had facial reconstructive surgery and, somehow, missed only a pair of episodes. “This [is] an all-new face,” he gushed in the aftermath. “I did it in eight days. I missed two shows.”
Regrettably, only two months following the car fire, Leno was involved in a motorcycle accident on January 17th that resulted in a broken collarbone, two broken ribs, and two cracked kneecaps after being “clotheslined.” The comedian revealed that the accident was caused by his panic about another possible fire threat.
“You’re a 72-year-old guy and an 83-year-old motorcycle. What could go wrong?” Leno said jokingly. “I said, ‘Uh oh. It’s dripping gas. I don’t want to catch fire. Lemme turn around.’ I turn around in a parking lot, and the guy had a wire across a parking lot but with no flag. And the sun was right here. And, boom, it just hit me.”
Leno revealed that the injuries from the motorcycle accident caused his newly fixed face to re-scar, thus requiring him to go in for another plastic surgery. “It cut my face again,” he added. “So I called my face guy. I go, ‘Listen, you know [how] you gave me that new face? I gotta get it fixed.’ [He asked], ‘What’d you do?’ I told him, I drove up there and he fixed it again.”
