Many people have shown their support with 9,600 upvotes to a Redditor who shared his experience during a 10-hour long flight from Greece to the US. He detailed his story on the platform, asking if he was an a–hole for not giving up his seat for a mother who wanted her family of four to sit together.
From the post trend, it is not only Redditors backing the passenger up, but most Internet users. People frowned on the entitlement mentality of the family and shared if the mother really wanted her family to sit together, she would have booked way ahead or paid extra for the seat, as the storyteller did.
After settling in from his long flight, u/Unlikely-Strategy596 posted his story starting with, “AITA (Am I the a**hole) for not giving up my plane seat so a family could be all together?” He then explained the scenario, “I traveled home today from Greece. The flight was roughly ten hours and around this time of year, it’s extremely hectic. I booked my ticket specifically to be closer to the front of the plane so I can be closer to the gate when it’s time to get out. I personally hate travelings so I spent a bit more money to be closer.”
After emphasizing that he intentionally spent his money to get comfort, he continued, “When I got on the plane, a family of four approached me and asked if I could switch spots. Normally I’d be okay with that, but switching spots would mean moving back 20 rows down, which leaves me at an inconvenience, and I would not be getting my moneys worth.”
He respectfully declined, saying he’d prefer to keep his seat; then the lady flared up: “The woman said that I was being an a**hole and should just give up my seat so she could sit with her husband and kids.” At this point, he just had to put the mother in her place, “Respectfully, ma’am, your travel issues are not my problem. I am keeping the seat I paid for.”
Despite the firm response, the woman wouldn’t take no for an answer and went on to include other passengers, “Wow look at this a**hole who can’t even move seats so a family could sit all together.” Shutting her down finally, he replied, “Maybe you should have booked ahead of time or spent more money on tickets so you all could sit together. This is not my issue. Grow up and get over it. I am not moving seats. End of story!”
After the matter died down a bit, the husband tried to guilt-trip him with his apology: “I sat down, her husband apologized to me for her behavior and said that, ‘She hates traveling, but giving her the seat would’ve made things easier in the end.'”
Finally, he concluded his post with the question he asked at the beginning, “So, AITA for not giving up my seat?”
